Lego heart necklace

How About Orange

I just saw this DIY pixel heart necklace (made with paper) on one of my favorite Web sites, How About Orange, and immediately had to make one ...

with Legos!

And I'm going to wear it this weekend to Brickfair, because where else would I wear a Lego heart but to a convention filled to the top with Lego-goodness. This is the second year for Birmingham to host the convention for AFOLs (Adult Fans of Legos) and it's lots of fun to take the boys to see all the cool things folks have built with Legos.

Since I've never shared this, here's another Lego necklace I made about two years ago. Super-easy DIY (two Lego pieces, two jump rings and a length of chain) that always gets me compliments.

Okay, now that I thoroughly wasted an hour, I guess I'll wash those dinner dishes.

LEGO punk

You could consider me a LEGO fangirl. Will has enthusiastically taken to legos and mommy and daddy are right there with him. And so are the grandmothers. Will gets tons of sets at birthdays and holidays. One of his favorite stores is the LEGO store at the Galleria (his other favorite? The Apple store of course).

We like legos because they are fairly inexpensive (a treat for son and dad is to "pick your own" bricks at the store for $8) and inspire creativity. You can make just about anything and then play with it. We are lucky to have the LEGO store in town ... they host free monthly builds and special events.

Recently I saw this picture (sorry, don't remember which blog featured it) and thought ... $250??!!! It's nice and all, does have a diamond but heck, for $2.50 I'll just make my own.

Which I did in about 5 seconds. Supplies include legos (I bought my own and Will was right there making sure I didn't raid his box), hot glue and ring blanks. I had a very hard time finding ring blanks at the local craft stores so bought some off Etsy. Glue ring blank to lego, making sure it's centered, and you are ready to build in style. For fun, add some "bling."

See, mine has a "diamond" too!

In no way am I trying to claim originality. I made mine without looking up instructions but there are plenty of folks out there making these. Chris likes them so much that he suggested I make some to sell but a quick search on Etsy turns up close to 200 hits. If we ever travel to a LEGO Con (oh yes, there are conventions) maybe I can make some to trade. That would be cool.

Here are some more cool LEGO jewelry ideas ...

I love the heart shape of this necklace, the clasp is the legos!

For the ultimate Lego fans, these could stand in for wedding rings.

Here is another more expensive but very mod Lego ring that you can build on.

Want more jewelry? Ubrickit is the mother lode.

FunkyTrend did a whole post on interesting Lego jewelry.

Fabulous Friday — I like shiny things

I like shiny things. I'm a magpie like that. I can be stoppped on a dime by something that sparkles. Not that I wear a lot of shiny things; I like most of my jewelry and clothing to be simple and clean. Silver is simple ... and shines.

I know Valentine's Day is behind us, but I have been thinking about the necklace above ever since I saw it. Chris, if you are reading this, BOOKMARK Lisa Leonard Designs NOW. I also love this from Figs & Ginger ...

I've seen it with the single momma bird and baby birds but not with a mommy and daddy bird (or mommy and mommy or daddy and daddy, whatever you got.) They also have this ...

Come on, now isn't that just the cutest little necklace to celebrate being a mommy. Perfect for Mother's Day. I will warn you, they look much bigger on screen than in person. A friend has one and I was surprised at how dainty the necklace looked on.

I can tell you what is NOT fabulous, a house full of sick boys, big and little. It's a good thing I've stayed well -- when mom goes down, the whole house goes down. I'm off to tend the household. Enjoy your weekend!
